The Folk Music of African Americans                                       Grades 1-12, College, Community

 

  • “From the coast of Africa I came!”  Speak my words to me with song.    The history of the lives and music of the African American People are brought to life as students become a part of this musical drama.  The journey begins in Africa with musical stops throughout American history.

 

This Little Light of Mine                                                                 Grades 6-12, College, Community   

 

  • I sang for Royalty and for Presidents.  My music is my life.  It is my story.  The lives and music of African American concert artists Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, Marie Selika, Sissieretta Jones, Marion Anderson and Leontyne Price are brought to life.  Students learn about the impact that these women and their music had on society.

Around The World with Music and Motion                                    Grades Pre k-2

 

  • All aboard!  The train is about to leave the station. Students board a musical train and travel through song and dance to Russia, Italy, Germany, France, and Africa.  They learn about the people who live in these countries as they sing songs in the language of the land.  The trip back to America is filled with songs, facts and fun.

 

Opera Imitates Life                                                                              Grades 6-12 

 

  • What is opera all about?  Singing, acting, stage movement, and much more! Conflict resolution and peer pressure are just a few of the issues explored as students become a part of select operatic scenes. Students discover situations that they face in growing up in  the world today and how to cope with them. 

 

  

Songs of Africa                                                                                           Grades 1-5

 

 

 

  • The Nyaya, Ngano, Game Songs, Story Songs and Recreational Songs of Ghana and Zimbabwe round out this presentation with dance and dramatization.  Students dress up like the characters they portray.  Songs are taught in the original language.

 

Residencies

 

 

 

 

                                                                                     Models:

 

Model 1

Sequential Daily Format of artist sessions (for example Monday through Friday for one week).

 

Model 2

Provides Regular Sessions over a longer period of time (for example

every Monday and Wednesday for four weeks). 

 

Session Content and Length:

 

Each session will consist of artist – taught sessions with students (30 minutes to

1 1/2 hours).  Teacher/artist-reflection (30 to 45 minutes) to discuss effectiveness of the lesson, follow-up activities and concurrent activities in the classroom or within the site.  Although the reflection may not be held immediately following the session it should be held prior to the next scheduled meeting with students. 

 

Residency Focus:

 

Residencies will focus on music and arts integration.  Music, dance, drama and creative writing will be explored to allow students the opportunity to develop skills in reading, writing, speech, discipline and self confidence.  Multicultural, awareness as well as activities that will involve students in the many cultures of the world will also be a part of select sessions.  Music residencies will give students the opportunity to go beyond the classroom as they take part in vocal and/or instrumental music.  Integrated Arts Residencies are designed to increase the capacity of the participating teacher(s) ability to incorporate the arts into classroom activities

 

Documentation:

 

Artist and teachers or coordinators will submit a final written evaluations of the residency.  Artist will provide final residency outline, copies of student

assignments and student portfolios as well as other materials created for the residency.

These programs are designed to help students go beyond the classroom in their knowledge of music.  Vocal as well as instrumental music are explored in these residencies.  Standards set by the Department of Education are used as a guide for these programs.

Around The World with Music and Motion                            Pre K-3

 

All aboard this train is about to leave the station!  Students travel the world through music, learning games and songs of the land as they go.  Songs are taught in the original language.

 

 

Classics to Modern                                                                       4-6

 

Vocal music through the years will be the focus of this residency.  Students will hear live performances of vocal literature from the baroque era as well as modern masterpieces.  Participants will explore the lives of great opera singers as they dress the part and sing. They will step back in time and bring it to the future as they make their own opera. (Model 2 only)

 

 

Sing, Sing, Sing                                                                                6-12

 

This residency allows students to develop the voice through posture,  breath control and vocal technique.  Singing in groups as well as individually will be the focus of this residency. (Model 2 only)

 

 

 

 

 

Residency Programs:  Arts Integrated

 

These programs use natural connections between one or more art forms and one or more subject areas (language arts and social studies) to assist students in learning the objectives in both the art form and the subject area.   Standards set by the Department of Education are used as a guide for these programs.

Reading is Music to my Ears                                           1-5

 

Students explore the printed word in book form as they keep a journal of poems and ideas about what they read. Skills in language arts, reading, speech and confidence will be strengthened as students bring words to life. 

Elements of music such as meter, harmony, verse and space will be used to highlight the natural connections between these disciplines.

 

Word Power                                                                          6-8

 

Students will have the opportunity to explore writings and speeches of individuals who have made an impact on society.  The words, works and ideas of these people will be the focus of this residency.  Students will become poets, community leaders and educators as they study the works of others and prepare to give their own presentations. Rhythm, tone and harmony are just a few of the musical elements that will be used as students discover the power of words. 

 

Coming of Age                                                                          9-12

 

High School is a time of change, transition, choices and consequences.  Students will explore a “coming of age” book.   Lessons for life, literary as well as the books dramatic content will be the focus.   “Dreams of My Father” by Barack Obama is one of the books recommended; however other books may be suggested. (Model 2 only)
